This pilot study sought to investigate the effects of purposeful activities using rehabilitation equipments on upper limb function and strength in patients with acute stroke.
Fourteen patients with acute stroke participated in this study. All subjects were allocated into either the experimental group (n=7) or the control group (n=7). The experimental group performed the purposeful activities using rehabilitation equipments, whilst the control group had conventional occupational therapy. Both groups received 30 minutes per session, 4-5 times a week, for 6 weeks. The outcome measurements were conducted using the Jebsen-Tylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT) and Manual Muscle Test (MMT) to compare the upper limb function and strength before and after intervention.
After intervention, the both group showed improvement in upper limb function and strength compared to before the intervention. The experimental group showed a significant improvement in shoulder flexion and abduction, as well as elbow extension than the control group (p<.05). There was no significant difference in upper limb function between the two groups (p>.05).
These findings suggest that purposeful activities using rehabilitation equipments have a positive effect on strength of shoulder and elbow in acute stroke patients.
